Israel-Gaza live updates: Hamas publishes names of 20 living Israeli hostages to be released

President Donald Trump said hostages being held by Hamas could be released on Monday under the first phase of an agreement brokered by the U.S.

Speaking to Fox News' Sean Hannity on Wednesday night, Trump said, “The big thing is, hostages are going to be released … probably Monday."

He added, "They're deep ... in the earth, and they're being gotten and a lot of things are happening right now as we speak. So much is happening to get the hostages freed, and we think they'll all be coming back on Monday."

The release of the hostages includes the bodies of those who have died, which is believed to number 28, Trump said.

Trump said "the whole world came together" to support the ceasefire proposal, citing the support of various Arab countries during negotiations.

Following the announcement of the peace agreement being reached, Hamas said it has submitted the list of names of Palestinian prisoners to be released by Israel as part of the first phase of the deal, Hamas said in a statement.

"We are awaiting final agreement on the names, in preparation for announcing them to our people through the Prisoners’ Media Office," Hamas said in the statement.

The Gaza Government Media Office warned Palestinians in Gaza to "exercise the utmost caution and care" during any movements or travel and discouraged people from traveling from north to south or south to north along the two main roads inside the Strip.

"We emphasize to our great Palestinian people the need to exercise the utmost caution and care during their movements and travel and not to feel completely reassured until a clear and confirmed official announcement is issued," the Gaza Government Media Office in the Hamas-run territory said in a statement.

The agreement between Israel and Hamas announced Wednesday concerns the initial steps of a U.S.-backed framework for peace in Gaza -- but not the entirety of President Donald Trump’s sweeping 20-point plan unveiled last week.

Officials familiar with the negotiations say the talks have been almost singularly focused on what would happen in the initial few days and weeks of the deal: the partial Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and the exchange of the nearly 50 living and dead hostages for Palestinian prisoners.

Some of the most difficult points, such as the governance of Gaza and the disarmament of Hamas fighters, will still need to be negotiated down the line, officials say.

Still, there was building optimism through the week that talks were on the verge of a major breakthrough -- and the deal in principle on the first phase ultimately beat expectations. Some officials felt earlier that they would be lucky to get things tied up before the weekend.

It's not the first time, however, that the U.S. has brokered a multi-part agreement aimed at ending the conflict that includes the release of hostages in an initial phase.

At the beginning of the year, the Trump and Biden administrations, along with other mediators, brokered a three-phase agreement, which ultimately fell apart after the release of more than 30 hostages -- before negotiations on a second phase of the framework could truly get underway.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, calling it a "great day for Israel," said he will convene the Israeli government Thursday to "ratify" the ceasefire agreement and "bring all of our hostages home."

In a statement originally in Hebrew, Netanyahu thanked President Donald Trump for his "commitment to the sacred mission of freeing" the hostages.
