Bondi says Trump will 'probably' leave after second term

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt teased the tariff announcement coming on Wednesday, but continued to give little detail about what they will entail.

"Tomorrow will go down as one of the most important days in modern American history," she said.

Leavitt said Trump has made a "decision and a determination" on the tariffs, but she would not divulge specifics from the podium.

"He is going to announce that decision tomorrow. I don't want to get ahead of the president. This is obviously a very big day. He is with his trade and tariff team right now, perfecting it to make sure this is a perfect deal for the American people and the American worker," she said.

House Speaker Mike Johnson said Republicans are "trying to sort out" what role Rep. Elise Stefanik will have in party leadership after the White House pulled her nomination to serve as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

"Elise is a dear friend, trusted colleague. She's a super talent, and she brings, has always brought a lot to the table. And she stepped down from her conference chair role, and on her important committee assignments, she was in line to have a gavel on some of those, and the circumstances changed," Johnson said.

Johnson said since all leadership roles are currently filled, "we're trying to figure out some creative role for Elise to play."

Trump cited the House GOP's narrow majority as the reason for pulling the plug on Stefanik's nomination. Stefanik gave up her role as House Republican Conference Chair after she was nominated for the role shortly after the November election.

When asked if there is a legal path for President Donald Trump to seek a third term and if he'd support him, Speaker Mike Johnson said it would be an uphill battle.

"You have to amend the Constitution to do it and that's a high bar. The president and I have talked about this, joked about it, he's joked about it with me on stage before. You know, we take him at his word," Johnson said at a press conference with House Republican leadership.

"But I think he recognizes the constitutional limitations and I'm not sure there's a move about to amend the Constitution," Johnson said.

Robert Califf, who served two stints as commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, said in a LinkedIn post Tuesday that the agency "as we’ve known it is finished," citing the mass layoffs.

"The FDA as we’ve known it is finished, with most of the leaders with institutional knowledge and a deep understanding of product development and safety no longer employed," said Califf, who led the agency from 2016-17 and from 2022-25.

"I believe that history will see this [as] a huge mistake. I will be glad if I’m proven wrong, but even then there is no good reason to treat people this way. It will be interesting to hear from the new leadership how they plan to put ‘Humpty Dumpty’ back together again," he added.
