The race is seen as a bellwether for GOP governors in battleground states.

Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford will win the Democratic nomination in Nevada’s gubernatorial race, ABC News projects.

Ford will face incumbent Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo, who was endorsed by President Donald Trump, in November.

Ford, who was widely seen as the front-runner in the Democratic race, previously served as Nevada’s Senate majority leader and in 2019 became the first Black attorney general in Nevada history. In the Democratic primary, he ran against Alexis Hill, chair of Washoe County Commission, who campaigned on taxing billionaires and corporations, affordable housing and taking an aggressive stance toward data centers.

Lombardo, who is projected by ABC News to defeat six other Republicans in his primary, edged out Democratic incumbent Steve Sisolak by about 15,000 votes in the 2022 gubernatorial election. Lombardo, a former Clark County sheriff, ran his campaign on reducing business regulations and increasing housing inventory.

The general election is seen as a bellwether for how Republican governors in battleground states can survive politically while distancing themselves from Trump’s low approval ratings.
