1 dead, 22 hurt after tent collapses during outdoor church service in Virginia
The church pastor said a "burst of wind" picked up the tent.
Officials in Virginia say one person is dead and 22 others hurt after a large tent collapsed during an outdoor church service Friday evening.
It happened at the East Lake Community Church in Moneta, Virginia, at about 6:45 p.m. local time, according to a press release from Bedford County, Virginia.
Of the injured, 11 were taken to local hospitals and 11 others were treated at the scene for minor injuries, according to the county.
County officials said the tent collapsed after a round of severe weather.
"Prior to the collapse, a severe storm cell moved through the area, bringing heavy rain, lightning, and strong winds," the county said in the press release. "The weather conditions caused the tent structure to fail."
In a statement on social media, church pastor Troy Keaton said the church was celebrating its 20th anniversary when it "suffered a great tragedy," adding: "Just as I had walked to the stage to release people to their cars a burst of wind picked up the tent."
The pastor said he did not have details on the conditions of the injured.
"Sadly one of our dear brothers suffered a fatal injury," the pastor said in the statement. "Our hearts are broken for his precious family."
The tent had been inspected by county authorities on Tuesday, according to the county.
"My heart is heavy with the news of the tragedy at EastLake Community Church this evening," Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger said in a statement on social media. "I am grateful for the quick response of first responders, and our team is in close contact with the response team on the ground to provide assistance. I am praying for the EastLake Community Church and all who are impacted, and we will continue to support the community during this difficult time."
