Minneapolis live updates: ICE arrest powers expanded, memo says

During a briefing Monday, the White House appeared to distance itself from other Trump administration officials' remarks that labeled Alex Pretti a domestic terrorist following the fatal shooting.

Asked if Trump agreed with Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who claimed that Pretti "committed an act of domestic terrorism," and Deputy White House Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, who labeled Pretti a "domestic terrorist," White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt responded, "I have not heard the president characterize Mr. Pretti in that way."

Leavitt continued, "However, I have heard the president say he wants to let the facts and the investigation lead itself."

Greg Bovino, Border Patrol's commander at large for Minneapolis, is expected to leave the city on Tuesday, according to multiple sources.

Plans could shift given the fluid situation on the ground, however, according to sources.

Some Border Patrol agents who are with Bovino are also leaving Minneapolis soon, according to multiple sources.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz has penned an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal where he makes the case that "federal officials are lying" regarding the immigration situation and ensuing intervention in Minneapolis.

In a post on X sharing a link to his op-ed, Walz said, "I spoke to the President earlier. We had a productive conversation and I explained to him that his staff doesn’t have their facts straight about Minnesota. My thoughts in the Wall Street Journal."

In the op-ed, Walz wrote that he has "repeatedly appealed to President Trump to lower the temperature. But he refuses."

"I fear that his hope is for the tension between ICE agents and the communities they’re ransacking to boil over -- that he wants you to see more chaos on your TV screens, protests turn into riots, more people get hurt," Walz wrote.

The governor called on Trump to end the "unlawful, violent and chaotic campaign, and we can and must rebuild an immigration enforcement system that is secure, accountable and humane."

The federal hearing on Minnesota's request to halt Operation Metro Surge ended without U.S. District Judge Katherine Menendez issuing an order.

"I do not intend in any way for the depth of my analysis or whatever time I take to write to be seen as a belief that this is unimportant," Menendez said. "It's because it's extremely important that I'm doing everything I can to get it right."
