After days of Republican drama, the House on Thursday passed President Donald Trump's sweeping tax cut and spending bill.

Following Elon Musk's announcement that he plans to create a third political party called the "America Party" in response to Trump's tax-cut and spending bill, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent shaded the billionaire and former head of DOGE about his efforts.

"Look, the principles of DOGE were very popular. I think if you would look at the polling, Elon was not, so I believe that the boards of directors at his various companies wanted him to come back and run those companies, which he is better at than anyone," Bessent said on CNN. "So, I imagine that those board of directors did not like this announcement yesterday, and will be encouraging him to focus on his business activities, not his political activities."

The call came days after the Trump administration paused weapons shipments to Ukraine.

Zelenskyy said they also had a detailed discussion about potential joint defense industry projects with the U.S.

It suggests Ukraine is perhaps proposing to work with the U.S. to manufacture the weapons it needs, given Trump's reluctance to keep donating them.

Trump defends popularity of megabill

President Trump landed in Washington, D.C. early Friday, taking questions from reporters as he returned from his Iowa victory lap for the megabill.

President Trump defended the merits of the bill, calling it "very popular" and claiming that the only poll on the matter was a "Democrat poll." He claims that what makes the megabill popular is that it will bring the "biggest tax cuts in our country's history," and that the tax cuts alone are what makes the bill popular.

Trump also boasted about his border numbers in the month of June, but says he wants to "keep them going up."

"We just want to see if we can keep going up. We have had great numbers," Trump said. "But we just want to keep them going up, right? That's all we can do."
