Trump admin live updates: White House drops NASA nominee with Musk ties

Trump will swear in Jeanine Pirro as the interim U.S. attorney for D.C. during a ceremony in the Oval Office Wednesday afternoon.

Trump tapped Pirro, a former prosecutor and Fox News host, for the job after controversy around his previous pick, Ed Martin.

Martin, who had served as D.C.'s interim top prosecutor, lost GOP support for the job. Martin's past, specifically his defense of Jan. 6 rioters and inflammatory rhetoric around the Capitol attack, plagued his nomination.

Vice President JD Vance is set to deliver remarks on Wednesday at the Bitcoin Conference in Las Vegas at noon EST.

The vice president's remarks come just days after Trump hosted a gala at the White House for the top holders of his cryptocurrency meme coin. Trump said the gala had nothing to do with his official duties.

Trump spoke at the same Bitcoin event last year, setting the scene for his presidential administration and it's favorable approach to the cryptocurrency industry.

In a post on X, White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller seemed to give a veiled response to Elon Musk's comments criticizing the House-passed “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” saying that codifying the DOGE cuts would "have to be done through what is known as a rescissions package or an appropriations bill," not through reconciliation.

"The Big Beautiful Bill is NOT an annual budget bill and does not fund the departments of government. It does not finance our agencies or federal programs. Instead, it includes the single largest welfare reform in American history," Miller said in the post.

Musk said in a CBS News interview out Tuesday that he is "disappointed" with the "One Big, Beautiful Bill Act." Musk said that the bill increases the budget deficit and "undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing."

Miller swatted back, claiming that the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” reduces the deficit. That is contrary to a CBO report that said the act would increase the federal deficit over the next 10 years.

Elon Musk said he is "disappointed" with the "One Big, Beautiful Bill Act" that passed the Republican-led House last week, breaking with President Donald Trump who helped get the legislation over the finish line.

"I was disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly, which increases the budget deficit, not just decreases it, and undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing,” Musk told CBS News in an interview, referring to the Department of Government Efficiency.

"I think a bill can be big or it could be beautiful," Musk added. "But I don’t know if it can be both. My personal opinion."

For several days, Musk has been hinting at his discontent with the GOP bill, but these are his clearest comments to date criticizing the package.

The clip of Musk’s comments on the bill was released Tuesday night, but a full interview will air on CBS Sunday Morning on June 1.
