North Korea fires ballistic missile into East Sea, South Korea says

The missile flew more than 435 miles, officials said.

North Korea fired a ballistic missile toward the East Sea Saturday, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

South Korea’s military detected one ballistic missile launched by North Korea from the Wonsan area toward the East Sea at around 6:30 a.m. local time, officials said.

The missile flew more than 700 kilometers (435 miles), and South Korean and U.S. authorities are conducting a detailed analysis to determine its exact specifications, officials confirmed.

South Korean and U.S. intelligence authorities had been tracking and sharing information on developments related to the launch from its initial stages, according to the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

South Korea’s military said it is closely monitoring North Korea’s activities while maintaining a strong South Korea-U.S. combined defense posture and the capability and readiness to respond overwhelmingly to any provocation.
