Officer and Marine Corps veteran killed in the line of duty in Las Vegas gun battle
The slain officer was also a Marine Corps veteran.
A 30-year-old police officer died after Las Vegas law enforcement had a gun battle with an "erratic" person waving a gun, authorities said.
Just before 4 p.m. Tuesday, authorities received multiple reports of a person walking near an intersection who was "acting erratically while waving a gun in the air," Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Capt. Adam Seely told reporters.
Police and drones were dispatched to the scene, and a "gun battle ensued,"
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Sheriff Kevin McMahill said.
The suspect opened fire toward officers and at least one officer shot back at the suspect, Seely said.
The suspect was shot and died at the scene, McMahill said.
Officer Austin Abdelnabi was also shot and taken to a hospital where he died, police said.
Abdelnabi was a Marine Corps veteran who had served with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department since 2023, police said.
"His infectious laugh, larger-than-life personality, and genuine compassion left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him," the police department said in a statement on Wednesday. "Above all, he cherished his wife, Sage, with whom he shared eight years of marriage."
"We ask our community to keep Officer Abdelnabi's family, friends, and our entire LVMPD family in your thoughts during this incredibly difficult time," the department said.
