Man shot and wounded by ICE officer in New York City

The NYPD said the individual is conscious.

An Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer shot a man in New York City on Thursday, according to local officials and the Department of Homeland Security.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the man was shot in his vehicle.

"Early reports indicate agents surrounded him and a 5-year-old child in his car before firing multiple rounds," the mayor said in a statement, calling the incident an "unconscionable and incredibly serious situation."

According to the New York Police Department, which said it was not involved in the shooting, the man is conscious and receiving medical attention. The child is believed to have been physically unharmed, the mayor said.

DHS said ICE officers were "conducting a targeted enforcement operation" in the area to arrest the man when one of the officers "discharged his weapon," injuring him. ICE officers rendered aid and the man is alive in a local hospital, DHS said.

DHS did not say what led up to the shooting, saying in a statement, "The incident remains under investigation. More information will be shared as it becomes available."

DHS did not identify the shooting victim. According to DHS, he is Dominican and is in the U.S. illegally. DHS said he has alleged associations to the Trinitarios gang and has a prior criminal conviction for grand larceny and "multiple prior arrests for assault, robbery, possession of drugs, and weapons possession."

The shooting occurred around 4 p.m. ET in the upper Manhattan neighborhood of Marble Hill, the NYPD said.

"The NYPD was not involved in the incident and was not on scene at the time of the shooting," the NYPD said in a statement on X. "The individual who was shot is at a nearby hospital and is currently conscious and receiving medical attention."

Mamdani said he has called President Donald Trump and that "when we speak I will demand that he ends all ICE enforcement actions in our city.

"I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorize our communities," the mayor said.

At a press conference hosted by the New York Immigration Coalition on Thursday night, Rep. Adriano Espaillat said he spoke with the family of the man shot and they confirmed the child who was in the car with him is in the family’s custody. The congressman said ICE agents did not allow him to see the man in the hospital when he went to see him.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said she has been briefed on the shooting.

"We expect federal authorities to provide a full and transparent accounting of the circumstances surrounding this incident," she said in a statement on X. "New Yorkers deserve to know exactly what happened and why."

City officials have been told that ICE has been using a nearby Target parking lot on 225th Street as a staging area.

Protesters gathered in the hours following the shooting, some holding anti-ICE signs, as law enforcement worked the scene.
