New York Knicks fan no longer employed by former company, fined after taking Knicks-themed trash can
The NYC Department of Sanitation posted an update about the trash can Wednesday.
A New York Knicks fan is no longer employed by her former company and was fined by the Department of Sanitation after a viral video showed her taking a Knicks-themed trash can off the street during celebrations for the team's 2026 NBA championship last week.
Thursday's parade brought in an estimated 2 million fans to New York City's lower Manhattan, according to the New York Police Department, where streets were closed and flooded with onlookers cheering on the parade procession.
A video that has since amassed 7.5 million views on TikTok shows a woman emptying an orange and blue Knicks-themed New York City trash can and walking off with it.
The woman, identified by the New York Post, and who formerly worked for JPMorganChase, is "no longer with the company," a Chase spokesperson told ABC News on Wednesday.
The Department of Sanitation told ABC New York City station WABC that the woman was issued two summonses, one for $75 for littering and another one for "impeding DSNY operations" for $100.
"These fines are the maximum allowed by law for first offenses," the department said.
The department shared a social media post on Wednesday morning appearing to confirm the trash can had since been returned to the city.
"Home sweet home," the department wrote on X alongside a photo of the trash can and text that read "Welcome back!" and "We missed you!"
The Knicks earned their 2026 NBA championship rings in San Antonio, Texas, on June 13, beating the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 in Game 5 of the NBA Finals, notching a 4-1 series victory.
The parade was held a little less than a week later, on June 18. More than 10,000 members of the NYPD safeguarded the route along a section of Broadway known as the "Canyon of Heroes" in Lower Manhattan, the department said.
